Green Umbrella Film and TV Workshops

The Green Umbrella Film and TV Workshops are practical film and television courses designed to introduce newcomers, trainees and existing professionals wanting to widen their skills, to the 'real and practical' side of film and tv production for broadcast television.

The 4 day workshops, held in central Bristol, are run by award-winning producer and director, Nigel Ashcroft who heads the Bristol and Los Angeles based production company, Green Umbrella Limited.

Nigel has recognised an urgent need for these workshops. Over the years he and the Green Umbrella team have trained many newcomers as producers, directors, editors, sound designers and production managers. But today, with smaller budgets, less major series being made and smaller, lighter equipment the majority of production companies don't employ assistants, making it almost impossible for newcomers to gain vital experience in the business.

Nigel has more than 30 years active production experience as an editor, producer and director. He has worked in a range of genres including animation, drama, music, science, natural history and history. He edited the acclaimed Peter Gabriel's music video, 'Sledgehammer', produced Channel 4's BAFTA nominated trilogy, 'Saving the Tiger', produced and edited the Emmy winning National Geographic special, 'Crater of the Rain God', wrote, produced and directed the 'Jackson Hole Best Science' show, 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' for the Discovery Channel and has recently directed a major astronomy special for PBS called 'Seeing in the Dark', due to be premiered this September in the USA.

Green Umbrella makes stylish, memorable programmes for the world's most demanding broadcasters. Most are a combination of natural history, science and history but often drama sequences are woven into the programmes, making Green Umbrella a unique company from whom to gain experience and an insight into quality television production.

The workshops cover most aspects of production including scripting, research, budgeting, logistics, health and safety, shooting, editing, music, graphics and sound design as well as the complex world of deliverables.

The courses will be very 'hands-on' and full of information, as well as having specialist sessions and demonstrations from top industry-professionals. Nigel is very open and honest about his business and students will develop new skills and know-how, including information about different formats such as film, high definition as well as smaller formats like DVCam and HDV.

At present all courses are planned to run during the week but please contact us if you would prefer a weekend course.
